Add SCORM packages

Add SCORM packages

SCORM stands for “Sharable Content Object Reference Model”. It is a package which can be uploaded in any kind of Learning Management System, like Brightspace, Blackboard, Canvas, etc., without any change in look and feel. Brightspace Learning Environment is SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 compliant. For additional details, visit: http://scorm.com/scorm-explained/.

A new way to add SCORM packages to your course is now available. Until now you had to go to Your course > Course Admin > Import/Export/Copy Components. This option is still there, but not recommended. The new place to add SCORM packages is: Your course > Content > Upload / Create > New SCORM/xAPI Object.

How to add SCORM to your course

In your Brightspace course: navigate to, or create, the module in which your SCORM package will appear. Go to the Content tab, click on Upload / Create and choose New SCORM/xAPI Object.

There are multiple actions you can take in the new window:

If you have not already uploaded your SCORM package, click on Bulk Upload. Here you can upload multiple files at a time, max. 50. When the file(s) are completely uploaded, a new window appears: the Configure Course Package Properties.

In the Configure Course Package Properties window, you can alter the name of the package, and the description. Furthermore, you can choose if you want the SCORM package embedded in the content, or if you want to open it in a new window. If there is no built-in navigation in your SCORM package, you can choose to add external navigation controls. Additionally, you can enable review/retake functionality if your package has that built in. Click on Next. You can now Add the course package.

To add a certain SCORM package to your course, you can continue in the same screen after uploading a package or go to Upload/Create > New SCORM/xAPI Object.

  1. Select the SCORM package
  2. Click on Next.
  3. A new window will appear, called Adding Course Package, where you have a few choices:
    • Do you want a grade item created for this instance?
    • Grade calculation method (only visible if the question above is answered with ‘Yes’).
    • Version Control – Do you want to display the latest version or this version even if a new version is added?
    • Course Package Player Options – it will show the option selected in the properties as recommended.
  4. Click Add.
  1. Go to Upload/Create > New SCORM/xAPI Object in the Content tab.
  2. Click on the three dots behind the SCORM package you want to preview.
  3. Choose Preview.
  4. A new tab will open, where the SCORM package will be loaded.

  1. Go to Upload/Create > New SCORM/xAPI Object in the Content tab.
  2. Click on the three dots behind the SCORM package you want to edit the properties.
  3. Choose Edit Properties.
